Hate speech

Thursday, March 25, 2010
Fasi Zaka

Zaid Hamid, the self-proclaimed 'defence analyst' and a 'scholar' with innumerable other self-bestowed platitudes, has suffered from a number of humiliating setbacks recently. I wrote about this purveyor of hate speech, militarism and spontaneous fiction (conspiracy theories) nearly a year and a half ago, criticising him for hate-mongering and half-truths.

In retaliation, he sent out a mass email claiming that I was critiquing him at the behest of international Zionists and bankers, getting me threats from his acolytes and followers. No longer the darling of TV evangelism, today he has been put down several pegs, rendering him temporarily ineffective.

He was run out of Islamia College in Peshawar by a peace group, his conventions in Islamabad were disrupted by angry students, he's been named in an FIR for murder and his most ambitious project, creating a new Pakistan resolution at Minar-e-Pakistan in front of millions of his followers, as he had boasted, fizzled in front of far less than a hundred people at a hastily concluded event at Alhamra in Lahore on the 23rd of this month.

So, was it people like me, and many other columnists who did a far better job of addressing this demagogue, who won out with arguments of rationalism, trying to reclaim public discourse from charlatans? No. Factual argument had very little to do with it. And that is problematic as I shall explain further on.

What happened? Two things: first the overconfidence of his relentless ego that believed its own hype, and second a past that caught up with him. Let's look at each in turn, eventually coming to the point I mentioned before, that his misfortunes are not a cause for celebration.

First, ego. In his speeches, he rails for the reintroduction of the Khilafat system but is short on all specifics. Simultaneously, he will present himself as the saviour, using the royal "we". He is not one for modesty, quickly one sees through the ruse. He launches into huge spiels of how the CIA, RAW and Mossad are afraid of him. In one TV programme he claimed that the FBI was watching him and he had found a loophole on its website, that it didn't mention Osama bin Laden's wanted status in reference to 9/11. Zaid was sure that after the programme had been aired the FBI would change it.

Well, as usual with Zaid, the facts were wrong. Osama never claimed involvement with 9/11, only his appreciation for it, and the reason for it is tactical. If Osama was caught, any admission would bring a quick close to the trial, he would like to prolong it to give him an opportunity to critique the US for as long as possible within earshot of the US media. As it is, the website has not changed to this day, more than a year after Zaid claimed it would after his revelation. So much for being an "analyst". It's been more than a year since he definitely "proved" that Israel would attack Pakistan in March of 2009.

Regarding his total failure in getting a hundred, let alone lakhs of, people to hear him pass a new 'Pakistan Resolution', he has a new excuse that he has sent out to his followers. Apparently, he thinks it's just like the situation of the Prophet (PBUH) at Hudaiybia! Talk about narcissism.

A charismatic and well-spoken man, he got too used to followers who lapped all his "prophetic" words about politics without counterargument, and the summersaults and changing of position he regularly did were ignored by them on account of the force of his personality. Unfortunately, for him the problem with the media is that it creates repositories online, so in one programme where he tries and puts up a peaceful façade by saying he isn't against Hindus, it's easily contradicted by another programme where he calls them a "paleed" nation.

He says he hates the US, but will happily accept dollars for small reports he authors. It was almost as if he believed he was immune to the rules of logic, and that others wouldn't notice. Anyone who did was a CIA/Mossad/RAW agent, like Hamid Mir who he once accused of being just that.

He has been railing against democracy for the longest time because of Pakistan's cooperation with the US and his desire for his caliphate, but will never criticise Musharraf who set the current relationship in place. If it suited Zaid the rules were flexible. And hence the backlash.

Falling in love with celebrity circles was another problem. While pushing a hardliner Islamic agenda, he would also hobnob with rock stars and fashion designers who treated him with a cult-like awe. Increasing the personal realm of influence was more important than ideological consistency. Others saw through that.

And now to the past. Islamic groups turned against Zaid Hamid when an old case against Yousuf Ali (better known since as Yousuf Kazzab) gained prominence. Yousuf believed he had the soul of the Prophet (PBUH) within him, and was eventually sentenced to death for blaspheming. Documentary evidence has since surfaced that alleges close links between Zaid Hamid and Yousuf. Zaid denied any association for the longest time, but now admits to a link and has not outright distanced himself from the beliefs of Yousuf. This has galvanised the ulema against him. The FIR against Zaid Hamid for murder is for the gunning down of Maluana Jalalpuri who authored a fatwa against Zaid and was killed soon after. His family claim Zaid Hamid had threatened him before his murder.

Whenever Yousaf Kazzab is brought up before Zaid, he insists that the Quranic rules of evidence should be used and false allegations shall take accusers to hellfire. Funny, it never occurs to him to use the same Quranic principles when he randomly labels anyone who inconveniences him in his thirst for followers as a traitor and an agent.

Now, why do I say the downfall of Zaid should not be celebrated? Well, because the very issues of hate speech, militarism and false conspiracy theories remain unaddressed. If Zaid's past was clean, if his ego had not got the better of him, would he have been kosher for Pakistan? In their charge against Zaid, why are the ulema not also talking about how our religion is being misused to fan hate and not tolerance? Even if Zaid magically became irrelevant, what about the persistence of these arguments by others? What is to be done about the erosion of rational discourse in our country?

Is it no less a blasphemy that the ulema who are happy to put their attention to Zaid remain quiet when innocent Christian villages are razed by angry mobs? Or that the Prophet's (PBUH) instructions on education are routinely ignored in a nation that suffers from unforgivable illiteracy? What about the boy murdered in the UET for listening to music by the Islami Jamiat-e-Talba, why are the ulema silent? The ulema have said nothing about Zaid's other pronouncements and beliefs; their love affair with him is only over because of his alleged past, not his dubious present.

The truth of the matter is that Pakistan is in no danger of not believing in the finality of the Prophet (PBUH), with the exception of some small groups. The ulema have a role to play that they have woefully neglected, rather becoming instruments in reactionary behaviour, being anti-progress and sidelining education. Of course, there are some who are an exception to this, but the large majority has failed to provide for the people, preferring instead power over the illiterate.

There is a section celebrating Zaid's setbacks. That's myopic. One man is not responsible for the madness in a country where some, for example, in the middle class, cannot bring themselves to condemn the Taliban. A victory would have been if the triumph was for reclaiming sense, rationality and Islam in our national dialogue from those who subdue it for self-aggrandisement.

PakUS Strategic Partnership without Pashtuns

PakUS Strategic Partnership without Pashtuns
Press Release
Toronto – (March 19, 2010 ) - The United States and Pakistan will hold their first strategic dialogue at the ministerial level in Washington DC on March 24. The significance of this meeting can be assessed from the fact that apart from the prime minister, the foreign minister and government officials, Pakistan’s Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Kayani, will also be part of the delegation.
The main focus will be FATA and Pukhtunkhwa. The State Department Mark Toner, said “Obviously, we're talking about … Afghanistan, the situation there, the spill-over into the FATA [Federally Administered Tribal Areas] and how to really better engage. And in fact, we've seen some successes on that front in recent weeks on terrorism.”
However, no representative from the Pukhtunkhwa (NWFP) and FATA areas are included in this critical strategic dialogue on FATA, terrorism and economic development. Even the Chairman of the standing committee on Foreign Affairs, Asfandyar Wali Khan was also excluded from. We suspect because he represents Pushtuns, who have a somewhat different approach towards relations with India and Afghanistan (than the Pakistani Punjabi dominant establishment that historically has been more adversarial). Exclusion of Pashtun would mean that both the US and Pakistan’s Punjabi dominant establishment are unlikely to be in a position to solve the current crisis in these areas and can benefit Taliban and Al-Qaida. Pashtuns consider Taliban a sub-group of Al-Qaida.... See More
Pushtuns demand the inclusion of representatives from FATA, Pukhtunkhwa and other Pushtun representatives in this significant dialogue otherwise Pashtun will denounce any outcome that is against Pashtunn’s intersts and benifit Punjab and Pakistan military establishment only.
-30--
Background:
Pushtuns have been portrayed as being synonymous with Taliban and terrorism by a Pakistani-Punjabi-biased establishment. Since Pakistan is the main ally of the U.S. and because of the non-inclusion of ethnic Pushtuns, Pushtuns feel that whatever policies come out of these negotiations; will be biased in favor of one ethnicity over the majority who live in these areas. Pushtuns feel that the distrust that the Pakistani establishment demonstrates towards the majority of Pushtuns, reinforces the exploitation that has historically taken place at the expense of the people of these areas, misinforms the U.S. as to the true scope of what is happening on the ground, and will likely not lead to a resolution that both the U.S. and the people of FATA and Pukhtunkwa desire. Alienating the very people who have the same goals (namely to eradicate extremism and allow for peace to replace the Islamism that threatens to destabilize the region further), can only lead to more chaos. For Pakistan to be an honest partner, representation of the Pushtun people have to be considered imperative.

The Need for Pakhtun National Movement

The proud land of the Pakhtuns has become a playground for national and international forces playing political chess in order to safeguard their vested interests. The major players in the game are Secret agencies, Al-Qaeda, CIA and Religious theocracy (Taliban and MMA).The international secret agencies are transforming the Pakhtun heaven on earth to a living hell by detonating bombs in Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan and targeting their “political” rivals.

The result of creating law and order situation is weak security and instability which gives the impression to the external world that Pakhtun land – which is the prime target of interanational secret agencies, is no more the land of heavenly peace and tranquillity. The burning and bombing activities by the secret agencies in the Pakhtun land is diverting the attention of the Pakhtun masses from provincial autonomy to merely a question of survival and peace. The biased and criminal acts by the secret agencies are hindering all progress and development work in Pakhtunkhwa and are indirectly helping the Punjab and MQM.

The drama in the tribal belt is also a courtesy of secret agencies .Talibans to destabilize tribal Pakhtun belt in order to facilitate cross border infiltration into Afghanistan. The secret agencies are helping and supporting Talibans to implement their strategic depth policy to destabilise Afghanistan and Pakistan.Al-Qaeda is operating throughout Pakistan and is acting against the interests of Pakistani and Afghan governments. It is collaborating with Talibans too and indoctrinating rather brainwashing youngsters for suicide attacks to achieve their ideological goals both in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The international agencies are operating majorly in NWFP and Baluchistan using some pseudo nationalist elements, religious clergy and local criminal elements. It aims at the targeted killing of anti-imperialist forces, destabilizing Baluchistan to safeguard its economic interest against that of China in Gwadar and execution of its plan to have a strategic presence in FATA and the adjacent areas to contain and watch China for geo-political interests of US.

The religious theocracy represented by Taliban and MMA are unpredictable elements in Pakhtun politics and are ideologically based on sectarian and pro-establishment religious interpretations having intrinsic roots of contradictions. They are political amalgams aiming at exploiting the religious inclination and ignorance of poor Pakhtuns masses.

Lost in the self-created optimism about the occupied land of Pakhtunkhwa, the pre-occupied Pukhtoon leadership which is seemingly united now is wasting its energies to become a scape goat in the hands of opportunist Pakistani Politicians. They are being used indirectly to safeguard the vested interests of one or more out of Mahajir terrorists, Punjabi feudals, Sindhi waderas, Talibans in the form of MQM, PML (Q) - PML (N),and MMA despite of the fact that none of them have benefited Pakhtuns in the past. This is a wake up call for Pakhtuns.Welcome to the land of pure slaves. Pakhtuns are no more part of the great Pakhtun Durrani Empire. Hence the real challenging task for the Pakhtun leadership is to launch a strong Pakhtun National Movement across the controversial border in Afghanistan and Pakistan to regain the paradise lost of Pakhtuns in order to be able to face the techno-political challenges of the contemporary age.

The Pakhtun national movement possibly under the umbrella of PNDA and other Pakhtun nationalist organisations should inculcate a zeal and fervour in the hearts of Pakhtuns to achieve their lost glory. It should reach all Pakhtuns across the globe and in the nook and corner of Pakhtun land to invite them to become active members of Pakhtun national organic whole.

It should expose all the conspiracies against Pakhtuns by all institutions, organizations, parties, governments etc and impart political consciousness to the Pakhtun masses. The aim of the movement should be to attain political autonomy and strengthen the Pakhtun national character embodied in the Pakhtun ethical code of Pukhtunwali. It should at the same time propagate the Pakhtun code of life which is a beautiful and balanced combination of the secular and the sanctified cultural institutions of Pakhtun societal nomenclature called ”Hujra” and “Jumat” .It should highlight the fine balance present in the cultural life of Pakhtuns signifying the aesthetic outlook of Pakhtun social life.

Struggling to establish a Pakhtun society based on the tenets of Pukhtunwali with politico-economic independence and autonomy is an ideal worth struggling for to commence a new age of progress and prosperity for the inhabitants of the Pakhtun land. The so-called freedom of Pakhtuns in Pakistan is a fake freedom rather a trap of slavedom.Pakhtun leadership should strive to win political and economic freedom of the Pakhtun land which no doubt is currently depicting the picture of a living hell but in the words of John Milton “It is better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven”

NEGITIVE ROLE OF MULLAH'S IN OUR SOCIETY

what do you think if we totally ignore the role of mulla's in coming time in our sociology, then social development will occur with high speed...and if we re-socialize our society in religious affair and kick away the monopoly of mullas on Islam and Holy Quran then can we observe a more caring pukhtoon society..
i just initiated this thread to know your mind reflection about mullas negative role in our society...next dont you think that why we are so confused about simple and clear Islam?is it not just because of blend of pukhtoons culture and mulla's made islam in complete form of assimilation....mulla's does not care for cultural relativism but only stress that even put your culture under Arabic culture which is neither the msg of Quran nor Prophet....
more over they are fully involved in destruction of pukhtoons..they have killed more than 23lac pukhtoons in the name of jihad.
pukhtoons brothers its the time to wake up...

Pukhtoons defination by Ghani khan

The Best way to describe “Pukhtoon" is with words from a great Pushto Poet, Ghani Khan (Brother of Abdul Wali Khan and son of Baccha Khan, A Pukhtoon Legend)

Pukhtoon loves fighting but hates to be a soldier, love music but has great contempt for the musician, he is kind and gentle but hates to show it, loves his new rifle and his old wife, hot-blooded and hot-headed, poor and proud with strange principles, might be a loving friend or a deadly enemy in general he is the most simple complicated simplicity.
